Solar Sound Services was established in Chicago in early 1975 by Bill Daly and Karl Cira to provide a networking source and listing service for technicians, contractors, suppliers, producers and purchasers to find the technical services needed for their productions. Acting primarily as a contracting service, SSS would find the right vendor and connect them to the purchaser. As time went by, SSS evolved into an independent supplier. Oftentimes SSS would supplement a vendor with personnel or equipment to satisfy the needs of a particular production. The inventory side of SSS began growing until it was able to satisfy most small to medium sized events without sub-contracting additional equipment. This growth continued until mid 1986, when Bill and Karl divided the inventory. Karl established KC Audio, while SSS remained Bill's working name. Karl concentrated primarily on rock bands, concerts and festivals; Bill serviced community organizations and theatrical shows. Together it was a two-fold approach to satisfy the business of sound in Chicago. Working together, as separate entities, expanded both sides of their businesses. SSS continued with a string of musicals, suburban festivals, corporate events and public address dates, while KC Audio built the rock and roll side with large rock festivals, touring systems and exclusives with traveling bands.

In 1988, Bill moved to the island of Hawaii and established SSS in Puna. The idea again was to locate all the qualified technical people and to collectively market the combined labor force and sound equipment inventories. Growth was much slower than before as the Big Island is a diverse place with very little entertainment dollars.

Still, determined effort yielded much success. Within three years SSS had established itself as a reliable source for quality sound, skilled crew, lighting and stage equipment. Yesterday's seeds have grown into a prosperous technical service organization. SSS is continuing to connect the needy producer with the best, most qualified people in Hawaii.
